Kara Tucker

“Final Stellation” is an instrumental progressive metal song inspired by Ecclesiastes 9:10: “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going.” This song features guitar techniques that were explored during the writing and arranging process. The specific techniques used were thumping, tapping, alternate picking, and hybrid picking/string skipping as well as improvisation and modes of both harmonic and melodic minor. Though some techniques were familiar to Kara prior to the grant, some were learned and used to highlight the voice of the author of Ecclesiastes through high contrast and dramatic tension and resolution. A theme throughout the book of Ecclesiastes is the lack of certainty in life and the certainty of death. Because of this there is great importance in maximizing creative visions. This song endeavors to increase joy through discipline and love of the guitar. Kara was also inspired by Ecclesiastes 4:9-10-“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up the other; but woe to one who is alone and fall and does not have another to help.” Indianapolis musician Nick Tucker co-wrote part of the song and was a driving voice through the production and arrangement process. Fellow grant participant Michael Bauman is featured as well with a poem performed in the center of the song.
